Visit the National Elk Refuge

At the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, you’ll have the opportunity to see the famous elk of the area, plus more fauna native here! This 24,000-acre refuge sits in an intermountain valley in Northwestern Wyoming, providing a home for elk, birds, and big game animals. The refuge is a fantastic place to view not only elk, but bison, bighorn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and wolves. It’s also home to the majestic bald eagle. During the winter months is the best time to view the elk, as they visit Jackson hole during their migration. In the winter, guests of the refuge can take a sleigh ride amongst wintering elk and watch them feed on natural vegetation. When spring comes around, the male elk regrow their velveted antlers, and the calves are born in May and June.

View the Jackson Hole Elk On a Sleigh Ride

The National Elk Refuge provides a sanctuary for elk during the cold winter months. This migration lasts from a few days to several weeks, covering as many as 60 miles. Elk Refuge sleigh rides are operated by Double H Bar, Inc. and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To inquire about a ride, call 307.733.0277 or email bart5@onewest.net. You’ll have the chance to see thousands of elk during your sleigh ride. You may even encounter any of the aforementioned species. With more than 175 species of birds also frequenting the area, it’s a good idea to have your camera ready!

Be sure to dress accordingly during your sleigh ride. Temperatures during the winter at the refuge are generally colder than in town due to wind chill. So, don’t forget your winter coat, hat, gloves, and boots. Layering helps trap warmth close to the body and helps keep cold air away.
