The Best Time to Visit Jackson Hole: A Complete Guide

Winter

While Jackson Hole does experience a harsh winter each year, with it comes a wide variety of amazing experiences packed into this winter wonderland. With a layer of snow covering the ground, as well as the Tetons, our mountain town is transformed into a place full of frost and festivities. Beginning in December, you’ll see the city come to life with holiday celebrations. We always recommend browsing Jackson Hole’s upcoming events before planning your itinerary so you don’t miss a thing.

While skiing in Jackson Hole is both a popular activity and highly recommended, there are so many more winter activities that shouldn’t be ignored! The surrounding national parks, Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park are home to some of the most jaw-dropping tours during the winter months. Whether you choose dog sledding through the wilderness or snowmobiling around the mountains, these are experiences you will never forget.

Our personal favorite is the sleigh ride tour through the National Elk Refuge. Not only will you get a beautiful view of the Tetons, but you’ll be zipped through the refuge surrounded by thousands of wild elk. While Yellowstone is a bit farther, don’t forget to check out those winter tours as well and even Yellowstone Tours that leave from Jackson Hole.

Plus, if you find yourself needing to escape the cold, Jackson Hole is also known for its variety of fascinating museums and art galleries, as well as breweries and bars reminiscent of the wild west.

Spring

Spring is a quieter time of year around Jackson Hole. The snow begins to melt around mid-April and afterward the weather slowly warms. This is an excellent time to come if you want to find lower rates and skip the crowds!

Hiking is a local favorite spring activity. As the weather gets warmer, everyone is itching to get outdoors, and, of course, the Tetons never disappoint. Use our guide for Jackson Hole hiking to navigate and plan your hiking adventures and take advantage of every moment! Spring can also be a wonderful time for photographers, as there’re plenty of places nearby that almost guarantee incredible wildlife spottings.

Summer

There’s nothing like experiencing the Tetons while the sun is shining. Summer brings an abundance of new opportunities and a new, much-welcomed perspective of the city after the long winter has passed. There are so many activities that become available this time of year. From white water rafting and hiking to stargazing.

Lastly, the summer is one of the best times to explore the national parks around Jackson Hole. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park are both home to exquisite sights and tours that allow you to get an in-depth experience with wildlife and a variety of natural wonders.

You can also read our guide to Jackson Hole summer for more activities like paragliding, horseback riding, mountain biking, and swimming. The possibilities are endless! Almost every outdoor activity is possible, all in one of the most beautiful settings in America. What could be better?

Fall

Watching the leaves of Jackson Hole change from a vibrant green to colorful oranges, yellows, and reds. It truly is a magnificent sight! You may find snow in the fall depending on the year. Sometimes the snow arrives early in mid-to-late-October, while other years we won’t see snow until December. Either way, as the temperature begins dropping, you may be searching for activities to keep you warm. One of our favorite activities to do just that is visiting the Granite Hot Springs. These springs are tucked into the Gros Ventre Mountains nearby and offer an experience like no other! The hot springs do close for about a month during the fall but are worth the trip! We recommend calling (307) 690-6323 beforehand to ensure they’re taking visitors.
