3 Reasons Why You Need to Run the Jackson Hole Marathon

marathon runners

Each September, runners from all over the country travel to Wyoming for one of the most scenic races in North America: The Jackson Hole Marathon. This beloved event includes a full marathon, half marathon, and a relay race through the Tetons. Participants love taking in the crisp, refreshing mountain air and stunning valley views along the way. If you’re an avid runner, this race should be on your bucket list! Here’s how you can tackle Jackson Hole’s biggest race this year. Learn about more local events when you download our free Vacation Guide! It’s full of recommendations for fun things to do during your stay at the beautiful Bentwood Inn!

Why You Need to Experience the Jackson Hole Marathon

1. Spectacular Scenery and Incredible Wildlife

Just in time for race day, the Teton foliage offers autumn brilliance in September. Our region's trees blaze bright yellow and orange during this time of year, and temperatures range from chilly 30-degree mornings to warm 70-degree afternoons. Be sure to dress in layers! Fall is also an important time for deer, bull moose, elk, and bears, who can be seen gathering food during this season. It’s no wonder we’re one of the best places for wildlife photography! For your safety, we recommend staying at least 25 yards away from all large animals while running.

2. The Route Is Nestled Within a Unique Setting

The Jackson Hole Marathon course starts on Center Street near Jackson's historic Town Square. After running past the National Elk Refuge, participants travel through East Jackson past the Snow King ski hill. Then, they join the Community Pathway system by Flat Creek. Afterward, runners head south on South Park Loop Road, which offers majestic views of the valley, into the quaint town of Wilson. From Wilson, the Community Pathway leads runners toward the finish line in Teton Village!

Note: The entire marathon course is run on paved roads and pathways. You’ll also find several Powerade and water stations along the way. Be sure to view the course map before race day!

3. The Half Marathon and Marathon Relay

For the Hole Half Marathon, head to Coyote Canyon Road where you’ll blast off from the starting line and follow a steep descent for the first mile. The course then transitions onto the Full Marathon course and ends at the shared finish line at Teton Village. Don't want to go it alone? Gather a team of two, three, or four runners and take on the Jackson Hole Marathon Relay. This race shares the same course, start time, and finish line as the full marathon, with relay exchange points set up along the way. After each race, participants are invited to enjoy refreshments and live music at the awards ceremony!
