Your Guide to the Best Elk Refuge Sleigh Rides

What You’ll See

The National Elk Refuge is famous for providing a much-needed sanctuary for elk during the cold winter months. This migration can last from a few days to several weeks, covering up to 60 miles. Visitors will see thousands of wintering elk during the sleigh ride. You may even encounter bison, bighorn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and wolves. Over 175 species of birds also frequent the area. Have your camera ready!

Elk Refuge sleigh rides are operated by Double H Bar, Inc. and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To inquire about a ride, call 307.733.0277 or email bart5@onewest.net.

What To Wear

Winter in Jackson Hole is usually very cold. Surprisingly, the temperature can feel even colder on the sleigh compared to conditions in town. Chilling winds often blow up the valley, and snowstorms can move in quickly. Appropriate dress for a sleigh ride includes a warm coat, hat, gloves, and boots. Be sure to dress in layers so you can adjust to changes in temperature!

How to Get There

The 2016/2017 sleigh ride season begins on Saturday, December 17, 2016 and runs through late March or early April, depending on conditions. During the season, Elk Refuge sleigh rides operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Visitors can purchase their tickets at the Jackson Hole Visitors Center and take a free shuttle bus to the sleigh boarding area. Tickets are $21 for adults and $15 for children. Perfect for all ages, this adventure will be the highlight of your trip to Jackson Hole.
